If you want to have your heart ripped out, watch some videos on YouTube about the Syrian refugees living in refugee camps. Just search for “Zaatari” (it’s one of the large camps in Jordan) and spend 45 minutes with the people living there.
You’ll be left thinking, “Oh, man! What can do?”
Beyond giving money, there isn’t much to do at this point.
This won’t be the last refugee crisis we see in our lifetime. Far from it. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported last month that there are about 60 million refugees around the world right now. That’s twice the number of estimated people stuck in modern-day slavery (in and of itself a massive problem).
Do you want to know what you can do? Start watching videos and reading and studying everything you can find. Prepare yourself for a CAREER in working with refugees (or whatever group of people you care about). It’s not crazy to think you might work with refugees in three or five years! I have a degree in finance, I worked as a computer programmer for nine years, and now I specialize in poverty and community development. And I’ve never been more challenged or happier.
He who would do good to another must do it in minute particulars. General good is the plea of the scoundrel, hypocrite and flatterer.
If you want to take steps toward understanding and studying this refugee situation (or other issues in our world) in more detail, please send my team an email at and tell us about yourself and why you care. We’re putting together a team of people to study refugees and other topics so we can know how to better love people in the future. We want to put experts into the field in many disciplines for the rest of our lives and today is as good a day to start as any!
It’s dark in the day
And I’ll say now – don’t complain.
Look up, the sun is just a cloud away!
