Life is Magic

Magicians are incredible. We wonder at them in amazement, applauding and laughing at what they do even though all their tricks are explainable. They’re not EASILY explained and take skill to perform but there are reasons behind the magic.

This past week, I saw illusionist Jared Hall perform. The end of his show looked like this…

His magic made me consider something. The secrets of the magician are what engage us. We can’t figure out how someone like Jared can take a whole piece of paper, throw it in the air, and make it snow. We love it. It delights us.

But when we think about God and his ways, we’re frequently upset that we don’t understand everything – that we’re left out of his secrets. And it makes some sense. Magic tricks don’t hurt. Life often does.

So what can we do? Remember that life is magic. How does ANYTHING exist? This entire world is a miracle!

And if life is magic, it might mean that God allows things to stay hidden for a while sometimes. Like the person you marry. Or the cure to a sickness. Or the strength to stop doing wrong things. Or the explanation to bad events.

Only when the time is right does he show us the result and delight us as the magician does.

Jesus was a secret for a long time…

[Jesus] was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.
_1 Peter 1:20

And God continues to keep himself hidden to people sometimes…

[Jesus] replied, ‘Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.’
_Matthew 13:11

God reveals things to different people at different times. It’s just how he works.

So if you’re wondering when your time will come to find out an answer, it may be tomorrow, it may not be until we meet Jesus face-to-face.

But remember how this works… Once a magician starts a trick, we start wondering, “What’s going on here? Wait, where did it go? What’s coming next?” There’s excitement and expectation.

Try to anticipate God in the same way. Yes, his wait times are longer. But his reveals are more spectacular and make more joy. We’re not talking cards. We’re talking cosmos.

Be patient in affliction…
_Romans 12:12

Delighting in the mystery, the anticipation…I like it. Plus finding a positive spin for David Blaine, bonus.
