Hey Andy! Great blog! I think this question is the best sin-show-stopper of all that you said: Heart, what rules do you love to break and ignore?

When I ask myself that, I know the answer immediately!

Thanks for sharing, Andy. Very true and well said. Definitely a heart check for me--the reality of sin and "tolerance" for disobedience is pretty gross. Re-focus and apply His truth.

@Noah - I'm with you, dude. All I know is what I've experienced in my heart (which is oftentimes terrible) and what I see in other people (which is sometimes terrible). The idea of our hearts and minds being renewed is super rad to me - that is, the bad parts of culture being fixed by how Jesus wants us to be. It's the fringe cases (e.g. Osama bin Laden) that test our beliefs the most!

Hey! Where did all your words go?

Did a book contract trump a loyal blog following? (Okay, I'll admit, I found your blog apparently a year after anyone else did, but still...)

Thanks for writing what you have written. I hope there's more to come.

I think the real complication is that we are just fallen beings. Remember how Jesus told the pharisees the reason why Moses allowed divorce? It was because of the hardness of their hearts. Yes, I think we need to use wisdom in finding the right person (and when I say right I mean great character, attraction, friendship, and of course equally yoked), but we don't need to put up all of these hyper-religious barriers.

You had suggested in this post
"There’s nothing we can do to control the way things have unfolded. We didn’t choose to have a complicated life. It just happened this way. And we don’t feel so hot about it."
Our life doesn't just happen to us, we actively make choices with consequences all of the time. Yes there is GRACE, fewf. But I do think that we need to take responsibility for our choices so that we can continue to repent (turn) and grow.

Love your heart Andy.

There is wisdom in having solid character. I'm so glad that I didn't marry the girl that I thought I would when I was 21.

As far as complicating things... I agree we do complicate this matter too much. We are saved by faith, we are Christians (little-Christs) because we believe in Jesus' saving blood. We have a relationship with God. Contrast.. We are not saved by our works. So many times we as Christians think that if we do this certain type of religious formula then we will earn our reward. What ever happened to just that raw confidence in God, like Abraham. He wasn't religious, he was relational, and he trusted God (although he did fail at that too at times). The point? I dont think dating is a formula, if it were the Bible would have told us. When the Lord blesses us, its not because we deserve it, but because He is good. "A man makes his plans, but the Lord directs his path". Choose the way of wisdom, adhere to principles in the Bible (don't be unequally yoked), and seek to care about the other person. I think it may be that simple.

"Hot for God!" So right on. In fact our standard of beauty is written throughout the proverbs - beyond skin deep. If God is the ultimate to be worshiped then we worship Him in our singleness and when we become married.

There is something that Ravi Zacharias said in his book (I Isaac Take Thee Rebekah) that has stuck with me. He pointed out that God walked with Adam in perfect relationship; there was no sin, there was just a pure undefiled relationship with man and God. It was at that state in Adam's life that God said that it was not good for man to be alone. It was God that stated that Adam was alone. But was Adam really alone? I mean, he had God. Yet God said that Adam was alone. Its as if to say that even in a perfect relationship with God, we will always have a part of us that is completed at the union of marriage, because that is the way God created us. I'd even say that it represents being created in His image - the triunity of God and the triunity of man/woman/and God. Just some thoughts.

In regards to not learning from our lessons. It is ALWAYS good to examine our ways and our hearts and LOVE the Lord our God. Even if the trials are not because of our folly (take Job for example).
